Sharing Your Stories: Deirdre Shares Her Journey

Deirdre shared her story with us a few months ago after her daughter’s wedding.  Below, we share with you in her own words her experience with Songbird.

“Because I know many people who own hearing aids but don't wear them (after spending so much money), I was reluctant to shell out thousands of dollars for something that would live in a drawer. My daughter's wedding was coming and I wanted to enjoy it, to be able to hear and participate. So I purchased a pair of the Flexfit Disposables. I enjoyed the entire trip, including the wedding and all my visits to family and friends and no one even knew I was wearing a hearing aid.

When the first of my disposable Flexfits gave out, I was sad, but of course I knew they would.  I made an appointment with an audiologist because using the disposables had been such a good experience. I have a friend who got hearing aids last year, and although she uses them, she says they are the first thing she takes off when she gets home from work. I didn't feel that way with the Flexfit at all. In fact, I tended to forget they were there, except for the feedback, which was a bit unpleasant.

I went to an audiologist and had my hearing tested. Little did I realize that what I thought was my "good" ear had as much trouble distinguishing voices as my "bad" ear. Wow. Now I knew I couldn't afford to buy two high-end hearing aids at one time, and it's not like they give a discount. So I ordered one ($2000! ouch). My plan had been to get the good hearing aid for my “bad” ear, and order a Songbird for my “good' ear”, but after the audiologist's results, it seemed a better idea to get the customizable hearing aid for the “good” ear which hears normal sounds ok but fails in the high ranges.  I decided to get an Ultra for the ear I consider my “bad” ear. The $300 price tag seemed amazingly affordable when compared to $2000, as you can imagine.

The Songbird arrived the same day as I got my first fitting for the hearing aid the audiologist recommended. So now I am wearing two different hearing aids. I will have to go to the audiologist to have the pricey one adjusted, because it just doesn't seem loud enough. I was glad I could turn up the volume on the Ultra and it seems pretty good now. I love that it doesn't whistle when my husband gives me a hug. It's still possible that I will return the expensive aid and just go with another Ultra... we'll see how it goes by February.

I'm very happy to have hearing aids now, and I trust that my brain will adjust to the new levels of sound and I will like them even better in a few weeks.  The Flexfit Disposable made this all possible. What a great entry-level hearing aid!  I hope that my experience may help others who are feeling cautious about getting a hearing aid especially at the prices even “low end” devices cost through an audiologist.  Thank you!”

Mead Killion was 100% correct in the front page story on him in the Wall Street Journal several years ago: Many older people with presbycusis only need a generic response like they get with a stock HA, as they will get quite a bit of benefit -- Not as much as, say, a $3000 Oticon Agil -- But the Songbirds represent a tremendous value nonetheless. Also, I recommend them for people who have allergies & congestion who need to break the conductive gap caused by non-suppurative otitis media (clear middle ear fluid) *after* seeing their physician or ENT.
